Overview

The rich history of Egypt has provided famous examples of board games played in antiquity. Each of these games provides evidence of contact between Egypt and its neighbours. From pre-dynastic rule to Arab and Ottoman invasions, Egypt's past is visible on game boards. This volume starts by introducing the reader to board games as well as instruments of chance and goes on to trace the history and distribution of ancient Egyptian games, looking particularly at how they show contact with other cultures and civilizations. Game practices, which were also part of Egyptian rituals and divination, travelled throughout the eastern Mediterranean. This book explores the role of Egypt in accepting and disseminating games during its long history. Over the last few years, the extent and the modes of contact have become better understood through museum and archival research projects as well as surveys of archaeological sites in Egypt and its surrounding regions. The results allow new insight into ancient Egypt's international relations and the role of board games research in understanding its extent. Written by three authors known internationally for their expertise on this topic, this will be the first volume on Ancient Egyptian games of its kind and a much-needed contribution to the field of both Egyptology and board games studies.

Con estas palabras inaugura Darío Villanueva el prólogo al primero de los tres volúmenes que la Biblioteca Castro acaba de publicar con la intención de recuperar la figura de esta gran escritora gallega de origen cántabro (Santander, 1921-A Coruña, 1995): una de las principales voces femeninas dentro de la narrativa española de los años 50. Tanto en Viento del Norte, ganadora del premio Nadal donde se rinde claro homenaje a Los pazos pardobazanianos, como en el resto de sus grandes novelas refleja Quiroga con maestría la soledad e incomunicación de muchos de sus profundos personajes. De esta manera queda reflejado en Algo pasa en la calle, indudable precedente de Las cinco horas con Mario de Delibes en la que establece un rico juego de perspectivas en torno a la figura del ausente Ventura, o a través del individuo inadaptado que se desenvuelve en el escenario taurino de La última corrida. Tristura y Escribo tu nombre, obras ya de los años sesenta se insertan dentro de un proyecto autobiográfico en el que el lector es testigo del madurar de Tadea, la niña solitaria y arisca que pasa del ambiente hostil de la casa familiar santanderina al internado de monjas del que saldrá ya en plena adolescencia. Paisaje íntimo que, inevitablemente, nos trae a la memoria otros personajes inolvidables de coetáneas de Quiroga como Laforet o Matute.
